Pinning & Painting

Hi blogville,

How is everyone? We’re preparing for summer. My son’s last year of preschool is coming to an end (Kindergarten next year! sniffle sniffle). We’re planning summer vacations and are trying to adjust to the already warm temperatures.

I’ve been painting a ton lately but have no final pictures to show for it yet. I’m going to do several posts very soon with some before/afters. (pinky swear)

In the meantime, I thought I would share a few fun items I’ve pinned to Pinterest lately. (and if you aren’t on Pinterest yet, come on!).

First, isn’t this a great way to reuse an old shutter?

Here’s a great way to reuse an old ladder AND provide a little bird bath or butterfly resting spot!

How about this for easy? Find a frame, add some burlap and top with an awesome summer item like this starfish!

Have a bunch of old vintage jars? How about using them for a fun summer accent or centerpiece?

Lastly, check out this beautiful, simple summer mantel.

Have you started your summer decorating? What do you do to “lighten up” your interior?

Before I go, I wanted to let you all know that I’ve decided, at least for now, to do “Would You Buy It Wednesday” just once a month. This way we can have one hopefully strong, awesome linky party without diluting it across multiple weeks. Our next one will be NEXT WEDNESDAY so get your posts ready!

Furniture Furniture Everywhere

For those of you who may have come by my site earlier, you probably noticed a note about my post being lost. So here I am, retyping the whole post again! Drat!

So let’s see if I can remember what I was saying…ah yes, auctions.

I’ve recently discovered the fun of online auctions! Have you ever bid in an online auction? Of course there’s Ebay, but there are several others that are run by auction companies that focus more on antiques, estate sale items, etc. One example is www.proxibid.com.

A local company here in Greenville purchases estate items and normally has a weekly online auction. I recently picked up the basins shown above (yep, that’s dirt!) for a great price.

I LOVE insulators! They make great eye candy on the top of books etc.
I also noticed some folks turning them into pendant lights on Pinterest!

A week ago a friend of mine shared an auction with me that she was bidding in. Then she twisted (ok maybe she didn’t have to twist too hard) my arm into bidding on some items. I picked up the glass insulators above and the two LOVELY orange chairs and nesting tables below.

I know, those chairs are bad huh? I’m going to paint the frames and have them recovered. They are great heavy chairs and the frames are in decent shape.

The items were from a home built in the 1800s that was an old stage coach stop. Cool eh?

I bid in another online auction this week and won a few more pieces of furniture. I think I’d better stay away from the auction sites for a few weeks – I now have furniture in my car, on the porch, in my office and in the garage!

If you’ve never bid in an online auction, check it out! Just pay special attention to the pickup instructions. Many of them are VERY strict as to when you can pickup and if you don’t arrive on time they will ship your items and bill you for the shipping!

Other recent notable notes…

  • Did you see Miss Mustard Seed’s announcement that she’s developing her own milk paint? Very cool.
  • Work continues on my new site! Soon (I swear!) this blog will move to my own URL via WordPress. Woot Woot! I’m working with some awesome folks on etsy to create my graphics and site so look for a BIG shout out to them soon!
  • In all my spare time (insert laughter here) I’ve been pinning fun things to Pinterest. Check out my latest boards – Paint Passions and Upholstery. Need an invite to Pinterest? Let me know, I’m happy to send you one.

I know my blogging has been sporadic lately and all I can say is that it’s one of those cases of stepping back to go forward. I give more frequent, albeit short, updates via my Facebook page if you would like to check that out.

TTFN (ta ta for now),

Saturday Stuff

Hi blogville,

I didn’t have a post planned for today but just wanted to check in. I’m working on a few painting projects that I will definitely share when finished.

Here’s a sneak peek at one…

It’s a plant stand I picked up at Habitat for Humanity the other day.

Ok, I’m now realizing just how bad that picture is. Sorry!!!

What are you working on this weekend? Anyone going antiquing / junking?

Don’t forget to link up in this week’s Would You Buy It and/or weigh in on what others are sharing!

Have a great weekend…

Before & After #4

I have to say, I am pretty happy with myself right now! I know many of you have been there, tackling a project you’ve never done before and then tickled when it actually turns out.

Remember this stool I purchased at an estate sale the other day?

Well now it looks like this…

What do you think? If you don’t like it or think I did a crummy job, please be gentle with me because it was my first time and I think I did great! :-)

Here’s what I did…

  1. Lightly sand with a medium sandpaper block
  2. Wipe stool down with a damp cloth
  3. Dry brush on Light French Grey by Behr (Home Depot)
  4. Let it dry
  5. Dry brush on Aegean Blue by Martha Stewart (Home Depot)
  6. Let it dry
  7. With a sponge brush, brush on Minwax dark walnut stain and immediately wipe it off with a damp cloth making sure to get the stain in all the little nooks
  8. You could finish it off however you like. I chose to brush on a thin coat of water based poly.

I’m sure it sounds like a lot of steps but each step didn’t take long and the drying didn’t take long either because you’re not doing thick coats.

Want to see it again? I thought you’d never ask!

A huge thank you to Miss Mustard Seed for all of her wonderful painting tips and tutorials. Reading her blog and many of yours as well gave me the confidence to try this. Did I mention the only painting of furniture I’ve ever done before was just using one solid color?!

Ok, leaving you with a couple more pictures because I can tell you are wanting more…

Have you tried something new lately? Let us hear about it!
