Weekly Love #10

Hey blogville!

I know I know, I’ve been a bit MIA lately. First, my iPhone is very distracting! Second, I’m trying to clean my house – it’s a disaster and my vintage finds / refurnishing projects are threatening to take over. Third, my “real” job during the week has been a bit demanding. How rude right?

Anyway, I did manage to post the Would You But It linky party earlier in the week so if you haven’t added your item, remember you have until end of day today (Sunday) to do it!

Now, I’ve got a couple of goodies for you today for Weekly Love!

  • Potentially Beautiful - have you checked out this blog? I love Gloria’s blog header, so pretty. But today I want to share a link to her recent blog post…all about her first auction experience! I’ve never been to an auction and have been itching to go. I’m a bit nervous though so I was happy to see Gloria’s post. Now I really want to go! Have you been to an auction? Let me know about your first auction experience and any tips you may have by emailing me at junkernewbie at gmail dot com. I’m working on a future article about it!
  • Miss Mustard Seed App – We all know and love MMS. But did you know she has an app?! Yep, she’s cool like that. Just download her FREE app and you can read all her blog posts easily on your smartphone. How smart is that?
  • Holidays – Ok, big disclaimer here. This will be your first holiday season with me and I need to warn you. I LOVE the holidays. I mean LOVE them. I used to be one of those people who was done Christmas shopping in October and wrapping in November. I say used to because now I have a child and a puppy and a booth and well, life is a bit busier. To help me organize my ideas for this year, I’ve started my Holidays Pinterest board! Take a look to see what I’ve pinned so far (some of the ideas are shown below) – I hope it will give you some holiday inspiration!

I’ve Got Your Chalk Paint Answers

If you’ll remember, a couple of weeks ago I asked you to submit your chalk paint questions. Thanks to all that did!

My friends over at The Mill at Gibsonville, where I bought my chalk paint, were kind enough to answer your questions below. Thanks guys!

Chalk Paint Q&A:

Q: If we don’t have the “official” chalk paint brushes, what should we look for in a brush?
A: Any brush will do to paint your piece but remember it’s water based….so easy to clean.  For wax – There is an official wax brush however, I would think any heavy bristle brush would do (I have not tried any brush other then Annie’s recommendation).  You may use soft t-shirts and cheese cloth as needed. The wax brush really works with pieces that may have detail to it or when trying to get a “brushed on” look.

Q: After painting, can you skip the wax and just use polycrylic over the top?
A: Annie recommends waxing EVERY piece after with clear wax, then distress if desired.

Q: What makes chalk paint so different (and better?) than latex?
A: Because it is non toxic and water based plus no priming or sanding!

Q: Can you use it to paint a chalkboard or is that a different kind of chalk paint?
A: Yes, the book recommends that you paint the board two or three times.

Q: Can I use chalk paint in my sprayer or is it best to brush it on?
A: Annie does not recommend using this product in a sprayer.

Still looking for more info? Well you’re in luck!

Jami over at Freckled Laundry did a chalk paint Q&A recently complete with videos so be sure to check her blog out for more info. Miss Mustard Seed has also talked about chalk paint and waxes quite a bit.

Annie Sloan is on Facebook and answers many questions there, plus the book “Quick and Easy Paint Transformations” by Annie Sloan is wonderful as well.

After all of that, if you still have questions, please leave them in the comments below and I’ll try to get the answers for you!

Happy painting!

Chalk Paint Adventures

See that band wagon? Yep, that one, with the Annie Sloan Chalk paint on it. See me? I’m on it!

Like many of you, I first heard about Annie Sloan Chalk paint on Miss Mustard Seed’s blog. Now I don’t know about you, but Miss Mustard Seed does a LOT more painting and has much more experience painting furniture than I do, so when she is loving a paint, I want to try it too.

I ordered my first shipment of the chalk paint from the Mill at Gibsonville in North Carolina. They started selling chalk paint online just a few weeks ago. A HUGE shout out to them because they had some of the best service I’ve ever received and very fast shipping. I went a little overboard…I ordered several cans of paint, clear and dark wax, and a book!

I decided my first chalk paint projects would be a chair and side table I recently purchased at Habitat for Humanity. Here are the before pictures.

table…see the bottom shelf? that’s the blue

the chair

I had previously coated the table with a Martha Stewart blue color. I then painted Old White chalk paint over the blue and let it dry. I lightly distressed some areas and finished it off with the clear wax. Here it is on display in my booth!

For the chair, I started by brushing Old White all over and then let it dry. I then added a coat of Louis Blue and followed that up with a clear wax. Call me crazy but I didn’t want to distress it! I like it just the way it is!

I don’t feel like the pictures do it justice. I really like the texture of the paint and the matte finish. The wax is new for me, I had never done that before. I want to experiment with the dark wax next time on a piece where i can get it into some grooves to make it look worn.

Have you tried the Annie Sloan chalk paint yet? What did you think?

Craigslist…My Thoughts

Today’s topic is Craigslist. Your darned if you do, your darned if you don’t – that about sums up my feelings on it!

Miss Mustard Seed shared her tips recently for buying things on Craigslist. I encourage you to check her tips out and some of her great finds for inspiration.

Personally, I have sold more than I have purchased on Craigslist. I am always looking to buy something but honestly haven’t found anything that strikes my fancy very often. I’m thinking I might need to try some of Miss Mustard Seed’s search tips!

Safety is the number one concern here people! Let’s face it, you are talking about either bringing someone to your home to buy something or going to some else’s home to purchase something. These are people you most likely have never met and you are dealing with cash. Please take a few precautions, it won’t take much of your time and could make all the difference. My recommendations, safety and otherwise, for selling are below.

  • Setup an Account – If you are going to list several items, take a moment and setup a Craigslist account. This makes it a lot easier to edit your items and keep track of what you’ve listed.
  • Prohibited Items - I don’t think you would ever try to sell any of these, but here is the list of items you are prohibited from selling on Craigslist just in case.
  • Spam happens – yes, when you list something on Craigslist you are bound to get spam. If something looks weird (i.e., you receive the same response from someone, word for word, regarding multiple items OR someone wants to give you a check for more than the amount of the item & have you give them cash back!) it probably is fraud! See my notes re: safety below. Another note on Spam – sometimes Craigslist emails that are legit end up in my spam folder by mistake so if you are selling something, I recommend you check your spam folder daily to ensure a perfectly good email hasn’t ended up there.
  • Anonymize – Say again? Well, when posting an item for sale, I recommend choosing the “anonymize” option. By choosing anonymize, your email address will be hidden from anyone that sees your listing. If someone wants to contact you, it goes to Craigslist and then Craigslist emails you.
  • Making a Sale – Yea, someone is interested in your item! Now what? Here’s how I handle it. The first time I get an email from someone I never give them my phone number or address right away. I always reply once without personal info and answer any questions they have and work to setup a date/time. Then, after making sure they seem like real people (and not SPAM), I send my cell phone (never home phone) and address and set a specific time for their visit. If I have several folks interested in an item I tend to honor the order in which they responded.
  • Cash is King – I prefer to deal only with cash so when I list an item I make that clear from the beginning by saying “cash only”.
  • Safety Safety Safety – This deserves a list of it’s own…
    • Location location location – I’ve had someone ask me to meet them somewhere with an item. I would never leave my home and meet someone I don’t know to sell them an item. My feeling is if they are serious and want to see it then they can come to where I am.
    • If someone is interested in seeing an item at my home, I make sure my hubby is either home with me OR I make sure my neighbor is home & they know I’m expecting someone.
    • If possible, I move the item outside so I don’t have to have people inside my house.

So, what tips do you have? what have I missed? Chime in and share below in the comments!
