Saturday Stuff

Hi blogville,

I didn’t have a post planned for today but just wanted to check in. I’m working on a few painting projects that I will definitely share when finished.

Here’s a sneak peek at one…

It’s a plant stand I picked up at Habitat for Humanity the other day.

Ok, I’m now realizing just how bad that picture is. Sorry!!!

What are you working on this weekend? Anyone going antiquing / junking?

Don’t forget to link up in this week’s Would You Buy It and/or weigh in on what others are sharing!

Have a great weekend…

The Ten Dollar Chair

So a couple of weeks ago I came home from our local Habitat for Humanity Restore with a chair, an end table and a coffee table for $30!

The chair was in good condition. Solid wood, nice detailing, just some scratches and a blah wood finish, for $10.

Last week I ordered two new Annie Sloan Chalk Paint colors from my friends at the Mill at Gibsonville - Primer Red and Aubusson Blue.

The paint sat in my house one night before I just had to open it! I decided the Aubusson Blue was just the thing for that blah chair.

Steps to achieve this look:

  • Apply one coat of Aubusson Blue to the entire chair. I like to pour some chalk paint in a plastic cup and stir in just a tiny bit of water (I find the paint is sometimes a bit thick straight out of the can but that is just my opinion!).
  • Stand back and think “wow, that Aubusson Blue is one bright color!”
  • Once the chair is dry, mix Annie Sloan Old White chalk paint with water (mine was about 60% water, 40% paint).
  • Apply this whitewash over the entire chair taking care to wipe off any excessive dripping.
  • White washed chair before sanding.
Finn the puppy is hard at work guarding it!
  • Once the piece dries, lightly sand in areas the chair would naturally have wear and/or where you feel there is too much whitewash.
  • Wipe away all dust.
  • Apply a coat of clear wax, removing any excess.
  • Buff with a clean towel.

Admire your beautiful chair!

Note: My camera made the seat of the chair look a bit more streaky than it really is!
What do you think? What is your favorite paint color?

Would You Buy It Wednesday – #11

Well we did it, we survived another week of this heat. Phew, it’s terrible isn’t it? It’s supposed to be 100 here today and this humidity is ridiculous!

So while we’re all inside trying to escape the heat, let’s take part in Would You Buy It Wednesday shall we?

This week I have an item to share from the Habitat for Humanity Restore. Many of you know this is one of my FAVORITE places to shop!

This is the front of it…it’s a hutch meant for the top of a dresser or something but it stands fine on it’s own and is quite heavy.

Sorry this is a bad pic, I had to take it on my cell phone!

The picture above is the back of it…the rest of the piece is solid wood but the back is that flimsy board stuff. They also put a light through it. It looks like the back board would come off very easily (just stapled on).

So…Would You Buy It? Oh, and it’s only $5!

If you bought it, would you paint it? would you remove the back? what would YOU do?

Now, Here’s How YOU Can Participate:

  1. Comment on my post; let me know if you would buy the item I blogged about above.
  2. Create your own blog post re: an item(s) you saw this week while you were out thrifting/shopping/junking.
  3. Link up to your post below to invite all of blogville to weigh in on your find(s)! You have until Saturday at Midnight ET.

Weekend Finds

Anyone go out treasure hunting this weekend? Find anything interesting?

Instead of hitting yard & estate sales yesterday, I spent the day with my 4-year-old and saw the Winnie the Pooh movie. Very cute! Warning though – at least in our area, the movie was FULL. Not a seat to be had and busier than Harry Potter! yikes.

I did go out on Friday to Habitat for Humanity though and found some interesting items. I’ll talk about one later this week for “Would You Buy It Wednesday” but I’ll share the others today.

Here’s what I purchased…

Two cabinet doors and one drawer. All painted white and in good condition.

What will I do with them? I have some ideas and can’t wait to show you! But not yet ;-)

Hope you all have a good rest of your weekend!

Oh, and if you found some cool things this weekend, shout it out below in the comments!

This is Dedicated to the One’s I Love

Of course I love my husband, son, other family members, friends, etc. But today I’d like to talk about “business love”. Those that help us with our hopes, dreams, businesses, blogs, and more.

Starting a booth was not an easy or quick decision for me. I knew it would require time, money and would perhaps cost me my sanity. I’ve realized this week though that there are a number of people we have around us to help us with this journey. Note: the following are not in any order!

Case #1 – my in-laws. Remember that piece I found on St. Patty’s day on the curb? Well, it had a busted bottom drawer. I brought it to my mother-in-law who transported it home to my father-in-law who not only cut a new piece of wood to fit the drawer but also installed it AND figured out why it broke in the first place so that I could remedy that situation. Then my mother-in-law transported it back to me and all is done!

Case #2 – my mom. You may have seen her comments on my post (she always signs “Junker Newbie’s mom”). She’s my biggest fan and even though she may think I’m crazy most of the time she usually just goes along with it! She is always sending me articles she thinks would be helpful or are packed with good ideas. She even scopes out local thrift shops for me so I have a list of places to go to when I visit!

Case #3 – my friend Karli. She is younger & more hip than me so she’s a good one to bounce my crazy ideas off of. She also enjoys going to yard sales so she is a regular in my passenger seat on Fridays or Saturdays. When I was saying I wanted some pillows for my booth but really didn’t want to make them myself (I can do it, it just takes me forever and I don’t enjoy it) she confessed that she can sew. Then she offered to make my pillows. They are BEAUTIFUL! (You’ll see them in a future blog post) All of that and she doesn’t charge much to be my friend — I think she just does it for the fame and mention in my blog. :-)

Case #4 – Kathy at Habitat for Humanity. Everytime I go to our Habitat for Humanity store, there is a woman who is always working very busily, is all smiles, and always says hello and asks if I need help. The last time I was in there, I told her I didn’t need help but decided to introduce myself (since I am in there at least once a week now!) and told her about my booth. She dropped everything and walked around the store with me to point out a few new items that came in over the weekend. She even found some items for me that I had missed while walking by. She is a delight! I gave her my business card and she’s going to keep a lookout for things she thinks I might like.

Case #4 – All of you. Every time I have a question, one of you is there with an answer or can at least point me in the right direction. I had the pleasure of meeting Barb @ Knack for coffee and got to pick her brain. I’ve emailed Miss Mustard Seed tons of times and she is always so kind (even though I know she is probably answering the same questions for lots of other folks). There are those of you who have mentioned me on your blogs recently. There are others of you who found me via a link party and decided to stick around and become a follower. For all of you, THANK YOU. It is with your kindness and knowledge that I am able to go somewhat confidently into the world to do what I am doing.

Important lesson for all of us: Do you have thrift shops you frequent? Do you go to estate sales that are perhaps all run by the same company? Take a moment to say hi. Introduce yourself. You never know what kind stranger might be your new best friend. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to thank those closest to you for their help and support.

Before & After #3

You might recall I posted the other day about my finds at our Habitat for Humanity stores.

See that ugly chair with the red cover?

Yep, that one, the one on the left above.

This picture doesn’t do justice to how yucky the chair looked!

Well, I got busy and transformed it.

First, I removed the seat…

Such ugly fabric!

Then I lightly sanded the chair by hand and brushed on two coats of Creamy by Sherwin Williams.

After stepping back to check out my work I decided to take it a step further and “weathered” it a bit by sanding some of the edges and wiping on watered down burnt umber acrylic paint. I then wiped off the excess. <Sorry, no pictures of this part, I was doing it alone and forgot!>

I honestly am not sure if I prefer it pure white or with the weathered/glaze added but at this point, I’m not going back!

I brushed on a coat of water-based poly (it won’t yellow), let it dry and reattached the seat with new fabric.

 Ta-Da!

I’m going to sell this in my new booth. What do you think?
