Q&A

Q: When did you start your blog and why?  I started my blog in 2009 for the purpose of writing about my adventures in life with family and furniture redos. It has turned into so much more than that! I am loving every moment of sharing what God has placed on my heart, sometimes through DIY, to share with my virtual and real friends.
Q: What is your favorite thing about blogging?  I think the thing I enjoy most about blogging is “meeting” new people and being able to share my thoughts and talents with my readers. It’s also fulfilling to be able to encourage others along the way who are new to the industry and also share inspiration.
Q: What is the hardest thing about blogging for you? The hardest thing about blogging, for me, is having too much to write about and having to discern what to share and what not to share. I have learned that as long as I am sincerely sharing from my heart, I can never go wrong.
Q: In your wildest dreams, where do you hope your blog takes you?  Oh man. This is a BILLION dollar question. Pie in the sky? Hmmmm…I would love to become a brand and travel and speak at conventions/conferences about blogging, DIY, etc. In these conferences I would  also speak to women to encourage them to find their God-given talents, embrace those talents and gifts and teach them to foster that type of development in other women.
Q: So far, what is your favorite blog post that you’ve written?  I wrote a post a few months ago that pretty much changed how I blog.
Q: What’s your favorite vintage/junk find? Where did you find it? I pretty much love everything I find but I purchased an antique chair and had it recovered a few months ago. I’d had it in my possession for over three years. It was in the garage just hangin out until I could figure out which direction to go with it. I love it.
Q: What’s one thing that you wished you knew how to do?  Hmmm…I’ve always wanted to speak another language. Maybe 2 or 3 different languages…Spanish and French for sure but maybe German too.

Thanks Kennesha for sharing with us! Now, what are y’all waiting for? Go check Kennesha’s blog out! Go on, I’m waiting :-)

Toodles,

Stephanie

Bloggers Brought to Light – HouseTalkN

Today we are spotlighting one of the most hilarious ladies I’ve ever met! I chat with Kerry from HouseTalkN sometimes on Twitter but got to meet her in real life at Haven! Check out more about her below…

House Talkn

Fast Facts

  • Blog Name: HouseTalkN
  • Twitter? Yes- come chat it up and laugh it up with me! @HouseTalkN
  • Facebook? You bet- come “like” HouseTalkN!
  • Location? We are living the dream, baby. We are raising our family in an  ”old town” neighborhood in Illinois. Think baseball games, block parties, neighborhood hide and seek, sprinklers and a wild rumpus of children!
  • Salty or Sweet Snacks? I’m friend of all snacks but chocolate is my vice!
  • Can’t live without? Coffee The sound of my kiddos playing outside.
  • Favorite Magazine? When I actually had time to read a magazine, my favorite was Country Living.
  • Favorite Book? Fried Green Tomatoes or Cider House Rules.
  • Beach or Mountains? Give me a book on the beach any day!
  • Coffee or Tea? Tea feels too prissy for my personality. I always giggle and raise my pinky. I’m a staunch coffee gulper!
Q: When did you start your blog and why? My sister called me a big ole chicken…I believe her exact words were “Shut up and do it, already…ya big ole chicken!” I had only read 2 blogs so I had no idea what I was getting into. I just had my one year blogiversary and I have loved every second of it!
Q: What is your favorite thing about blogging? I knew that I would love the photography, the house snooping admiring, and the shenanigans with my gal pals. The icing on the cake has been the super supportive, creative and funny blogging community!
Q: What is the hardest thing about blogging for you? I have more ideas than I have time to attack. While I love blogging, it takes a backseat to baseball games, cookouts, and laundry. Ok, so…the laundry has been taking a backseat to blogging.
Q: In your wildest dreams, where do you hope your blog takes you? There is a sponsor out there just looking for me right now. They are going to send me and my family all around the world to lookiloo at the world’s most beautiful homes. It could happen. Until then, I am happy to see what shows up on the other end of my lens.
Q: So far, what is your favorite blog post that you’ve written? I loved sharing the house tour and outtakes of “A Devine House Tour” because it married my love of historic homes with my love of practical jokes.
Q: What’s one thing that you wished you knew how to do? I wish I could sew. I have a sewing machine and every once in awhile, I give it a whirl. I always wind up putting the pedal to the medal. I can’t help myself.
Q: Anything else we should know about you? I was a teacher for 18 years and as of June 1st, I am a free agent! While teaching was a wonderful experience, this blogging gig is calling me home.
So, that was Kerry from HouseTalkN! Isn’t she a hoot?! Now stop sitting there on your hands and go check out her blog! And while you are at it, go like her on Facebook and follow her on Twtter too. :-)

Bloggers Brought to Light – Vintage and Flea

You may remember I started a series last year called “Bloggers Brought to Light“. I don’t do it every month but love to share more about bloggers as I meet new folks.

Today I’d like to introduce DeDe from Vintage and Flea.

Fast Facts

Q&A

Q: When did you start your blog and why?
A: I have been blogging for a decade but my current site Vintageandflea.com started in July 2011.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about blogging?
A: Sharing information that has my own personal spin. I like sharing things I learned and love.

Q: What’s the hardest thing about blogging for you?
A: I run a blog for a large brand and I am also a paid writer for a few sites. I try to be diligent about posting twice weekly on Vintage and Flea but sometimes it is hard to put all the time I want into each post.

Q: In your wildest dreams, where do you hope your blog takes you?
A: I want to eventually be the apartmenttherapy.com of vintage and junktiques.

Q: So far, what is your favorite blog post that you’ve written?
A: Well that is hard. I love to write, and I also love to take pictures. Right now I guess my favorite post is “Yes, We Finally Bought a Vintage Typewriter“. It is a companion post to an article I wrote for Worthpoint (http://www.worthpoint.com/article/retrophile-files-tippy-tapping-tricked-out-vintage-typewriters). But I also love the slideshows I create with Jack using photos we have taken at various flea markets and antique shows. My favorite is Brimfield Antique Show, September 2011 Recap.

Q: What’s your favorite vintage/junk find? Where did you find it?
A: There are so many things that I found that I love. But I have three favorites.  First is a vintage boxing painting we found in Tennessee (http://www.vintageandflea.com/home/2011/8/30/vintage-boxing-painting.html). Second is a Zodiac Clock by Mauthe (http://www.vintageandflea.com/home/2012/1/10/our-new-find-a-friedrich-mauthe-zodiac-clock.html) that I found at an Estate Sale, and lastly is this Keane like painting of a young couple (http://www.etsy.com/listing/82480812/original-vintage-painting-of-big-eyed) that I found online. However all these items I plan on selling.

Q: What’s one thing you wish you knew how to do?
A: It is a tie. I wish I could snowboard and draw exceptionally well.

Q: Anything else we should know about you?
A: I am a bottle blond.

Doesn’t DeDe sound like a cool chick? I would LOVE to go junking with her in NYC! Be sure to check out her blog and you’ll also want to read her recent interview with Ki Nassauer!

My Interview with Linda @ A LA CARTE

Q: When did you start your blog and why?
I lost my job in August of 2009 and it was pretty devastating. I knew my chances of finding another job in this economy was slim to none and I was right.  I was searching for something to stay busy and decided to look for blogs about thrifting/junking and found some.  I started writing about my finds and tablescaping in November 2009 and it has taken off from there.  I have said that blogging saved my sanity. I’ve made new friends and it really has changed my life.  Oh and I’m officially retired now!

Q: What’s your favorite thing about blogging?
Making new friends for sure!  I have been lucky to meet several Atlanta bloggers at get-togethers and I’ve made some close friends.  There are many bloggers I’ve never met but hope too!   It’s amazing how much we can care and support each other.  I was amazed at the outpouring of good wishes when my Grandson was born April 7th and I love the prayer support we give each other.

Q: What’s the hardest thing about blogging for you?
As most everyone who blogs knows, it can take over your life!  I know in the beginning I felt like it was all I did during the day.  Of course it took me forever to write those first blogs.  I’ve come a long way baby!  It’s not just the posting of course it’s the reading and commenting on other blogs that can take hours.  I have given myself permission to blog without obligation.  I want it to be because I love it and not a chore.  So far so good!

Q: In your wildest dreams, where do you hope your blog takes you?
It has already exceeded my hopes!  I have many faithful and amazing followers that I call friends.  I think getting to meet some bloggers in person would be wonderful.  I hope that someday my blog leads me to having the confidence to try a booth in an antique mall.

Q: So far, what is your favorite blog post that you’ve written?
Wow this is a hard one!  I have been blogging for about 18 months so that’s a lot of posts.  I think the series of posts I did for the Worlds Longest Yard Sale last summer was fun or maybe the 6 giveaways I did for my 60th birthday last June.  That was a blast!  I love doing giveaways!

Q: What’s one thing you wish you knew how to do?
I’ve learned so much over this past year and everyone in blogland is so helpful.  I still have not done a lot of mosaics and I would love to know how to make one of those headers using a mosaic format.  Still I’m very happy with how my blog looks right now.

Isn’t she great? Please go visit Linda and say hello!

My Interview with Junky Vagabond

Q: When did you start your blog and why?
A: Four years ago, I quit my job as a geek for a large utility company. I was happy putzing around the house, doing whatever, but about 2 months ago the blogging bug bit me. I had an epiphany that revolved around allowing myself to become the creative person I always knew I was, without any limitations. The reinvention was me becoming an aspiring writer, painter, and upcycling junker. The blog was a way to start writing and share some of my creative projects and vintage pieces for sale in my Etsy shop of the same name.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about blogging?
A: My favorite thing, hands down, is the social aspect of it; interacting with other creative types, and getting inspiration from them and their blogs. That’s how I was caught in the blogging web in the first place – by getting hooked on the DIY blogs! It’s a little bit like HGTV, but with a chance to connect with the stars personally.

Q: What’s the hardest thing about blogging for you?
A: Keeping it from taking over my life, definitely! I spend inordinate time writing the blog, taking pictures for the blog, reading other blogs…all at the expense of my other projects. I might be going on a blogging diet soon…

Q: In your wildest dreams, where do you hope your blog takes you?
A: Wildest dreams? I would be a best-selling author, a vintage junker with a real and very successful storefront, and millions of followers creating a petition for a studio to make a movie from my books and a biography about me! HA! You asked…

Q: So far, what is your favorite blog post that you’ve written?
A: This post was very personal and I put myself out there – which is totally not my style! It was called Clouds are Forming and it showed my first attempt at a painting technique called impasto. I’ve always known painting was in my blood, but never allowed myself to go for it due to lack of money, lack of confidence, lack of time, etc. Well, I have no excuses left and the response from readers was so positive! I am now painting in between crafting and loving it! It’s gratifying to follow in the footsteps of my painting Mom, aunts, and Grandmother (finally).

Q: Are there any blogging questions we might be able to help you answer?
A: When I first started this whole thing, I thought I’d never get any followers. Now, I want to know how to keep followers who are readers. I know that content is the key, but is there an audience for someone who likes almost EVERY project, and wants to do ALL of them? Do I have to narrow it down to just vintage junking and create another blog for other pursuits? Technically, how does everyone learn the HTML necessary to blog? Or do people have their blogs professionally designed and maintained? Last question is: How in the world do people manage the upkeep of a blog and the projects, and their normal lives? I can get sucked into the blog for hours at a time, and then smack my head, realizing there’s no more time in the day to actually be creative!
